2008 BARN TOUR

&

Equine Divine Art Exhibit

on Saturday, September 27

9:30 to 4:00

We had 5 Barns and 1 House on the tour and one of the barns is back by popular demand.  There was Equine presentations, Natural Hoof Care discussion, Barn Preservation Forums, Garage Sale/Tack Sale, and if that’s not enough, totally Free Drawings for wonderful Give-Aways .   Some of the Give-Aways for this year’s event included  a weekend stay at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth, Oakland County Parks Fun Books,  $200.00 Meat Package from local grocery store and more.

Due to our struggling economy – we discounted the Ticket Prices!!!! The tickets were now $10.00 for Adults and $3.00 for Children under 10 years old.

So thanks to All for attending our Pride and Joy sponsored by the Highland Equestrian Conservancy and then enjoying the “New” “2-Day” “Horsin’ Around in Highland” Event in quaint Downtown Highland on Livingston Rd.  The Barn Tour was held on Saturday September 27, 2008 while the Horsin’ Around in Highland event was both Saturday and Sunday, September 27th & 28th,  2008. The chili cook off was a smashing success!

Learn about the historical and architectural details of Highland’s unique landmarks.  Beautiful barns dot our community.  The sites include a peek into history-rich barns and charming new horse barns with modern amenities.

Equine Divine Art Exhibit
The Huron Valley Council for the Arts served as home base for the barn tour.  When picking up tickets, visitors were invited to stroll The Equine Divine Art Exhibit featured at the Highland Stationhouse (historic church) located at 205 W. Livingston Road.

Every one enjoyed the complimentary cider and donut reception while browsing local artist’s works which was on display throughout September and during the Barn Tour.  For more information call Wendy at 248.889.8660.

(The Barn Tour is a fundraiser for the Highland Equestrian Conservancy which is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving and protecting our natural resources while preserving the rural character and equestrian heritage in and around Highland Township.

Featured Barn:

LaRoffie Plantation

LaRoffie Plantation

Named after a beautiful Villa in France, this terra-cotta-colored storybook cottage style barn has many decorator touches.  Look for the hand-cast, horse headstall latches, oxidized-metal-art on the entrance door, lighted chandelier in the cupola and crow’s beak architecture on the roof.

During the barn tour the owner’s home was included on this year’s tour along with an estate sale. Also, natural hoof care farrier, Cliff Mortensen was demonstrating the art of the Wild Mustang hoof trim theory.

Additional Barn Tour Tidbits

Another barn is a basic pole barn construction. The stalls are of the European style. The windows were imported from Germany. The barn offers full comfort for the horses, with matted stalls, fans, sunlight and fresh air. The tack / feed area are climate controlled with laundry facilities.  The wash areas have hot/cold water and heat lamps. The arena has a sand/silt mixture on top of a 30 year old clay base. Additionally there is a 5 bay bank barn with a field stone foundation. The barn is of hand hewn timber frame construction with a random fieldstone foundation. Barn materials (wood, rocks, and mortar sand) were all from the adjoining fields.  Construction methods and materials indicate that the barn was raised in the 1870’s. As well this year we introduced a local historic landmark barn currently undergoing renovations.
